by a subsidised transport service to get their produce to the rail head.

Commission's Expenditure. — The Government notified us after the tour of the grain-growing areas had been completed, that it could put the cars we had purchased to good use. It was far from our intention to stand in the Government's way and the cars were placed at its disposal. On attempting to arrange a credit for the value of the second-hand cars we were considerably surprised to find that the Government declined to allow anything on the ground that the Auditor General could not allow any credit for the transfer of plant between Government Departments. We were not a Government Department, and there was an obvious rejoinder, but we preferred not to be drawn into any controversy on the question.

In South Australia and Victoria we were supplied with free passed over the railways, but in this State we have received no assistance of the kind, and the Commission's expenses are swollen accordingly.

The necessity of printing the whole of the evidence has greatly increased the expense of the Commission. Left to itself, the Commission would have cut down this item by only printing the really useful evidence, but, by direction was required to incur the expense.
